The observer

Ruth Callaghan. Twenty-five years a meteorologist with Environment Canada. Retired to Banff, still keeping the ridge in a notebook.

The work was never poetry. It was ceilings, winds, and whether a pilot or a warden could see the next ridge. The same method applies to a summit morning: is the deck up, or is the rock showing.

I am not on anyone’s payroll up the mountain. A clear day does not pay me, and a grey day does not cost me. That is why the log can say “do not go” without flinching.

The method is the sky report. How to reach me is on the contact line.
